A Brief History of Georg Fischer

Georg Fischer was founded in 1802 in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, when Johann Conrad Fischer established a small copper smelting works and iron foundry. The company soon became known for producing cast iron fittings and components, which formed the backbone of Europe’s growing water distribution networks in the 19th century.

Throughout the 20th century, GF pioneered advances in piping technology, moving beyond traditional cast iron into new materials such as PVC-U, ABS, and PE. This transition positioned GF at the forefront of plastic piping innovation, combining corrosion resistance, ease of installation, and long service life.

Today, GF Piping Systems operates worldwide, with a presence in more than 30 countries. Their product range has grown to include not only pipe and fittings but also advanced valves, actuators, and automation systems. Despite this global scale, the company remains true to its origins: delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable piping solutions built on over 200 years of engineering expertise.

Georg Fischer Approvals

  • BS standards (e.g. BS 5391-1)
    • What it is: British Standard for thermoplastic pipes, defining dimensions, tolerances, and performance characteristics.

    • Why it matters: Ensures compatibility with UK infrastructure and fittings; compliance with UK building and plumbing codes.

  • EN / ISO standards
    • What it is: European and International standards for plastics, pipes, and fittings covering material properties, dimensions, and testing methods.

    • Why it matters: Provides global recognition of quality and performance; essential for engineering contracts and exports.

  • WRAS (Water Regulations Approval Scheme)
    • What it is: UK approval confirming materials are safe for use with drinking water.

    • Why it matters: Essential for potable water systems; widely required for public and commercial projects.

  • GOST-R
    • What it is: Russian/Eurasian certification demonstrating conformity with local standards.

    • Why it matters: Allows use in projects requiring compliance in Eastern Europe and Russia.

  • Regulation 31 of the Water Supply (Water Quality) Regulations 2000
    • What it is: UK regulation ensuring materials in contact with drinking water are safe for human health.

    • Why it matters: Legally required for potable water installations; ensures systems pass inspection and approval.

  • Internal GF testing
    • What it is: Georg Fischer’s own stringent testing regime, including impact, tensile, and Charpy testing.
    • Why it matters: Adds confidence in long-term durability, especially under stress and temperature variation.

These approvals and standards demonstrate full compliance with legal and building requirements, backed by independent third-party verification of safety and performance. They reduce risk for engineers and contractors by ensuring the system meets rigorous specifications, while giving end users confidence that Georg Fischer products are safe, durable, and built to deliver long-term reliability.
